Australian Curriculum

Rationale:

In an increasingly complex, sedentary and rapidly changing world it is critical for every young Australian to not only be able to cope with life’s challenges but also to flourish as healthy, safe and active citizens in the 21st century. This is a strong investment in the future of the Australian population.

Technology and media will continue to transform our lives and change the way we communicate. Some health issues will endure while new ones will emerge. New forms of physical activity will become available. Students need critical inquiry skills to research and analyse knowledge and to understand the influences on their own and others’ health, safety, wellbeing and physical activity participation. They also need to be resilient, to develop empathy and to be actively engaged in their own and others’ wellbeing, using health, safety and physical activity resources for the benefit of themselves and their communities.

In Health and Physical Education, students develop the skills, knowledge, and understanding to strengthen their sense of self, and build and manage satisfying, respectful relationships. They learn to build on personal and community strengths and assets to enhance safety and wellbeing. They critique and challenge assumptions and stereotypes. Students learn to navigate a range of health-related sources, services and organisations.

At the core of Health and Physical Education is the acquisition of movement skills and concepts to enable students to participate in a range of physical activities – confidently, competently and creatively. As a foundation for lifelong physical activity participation and enhanced performance, students acquire an understanding of how the body moves and develop positive attitudes towards physical activity participation. They develop an appreciation of the significance of physical activity, outdoor recreation and sport in Australian society and globally. Movement is a powerful medium for learning, through which students can practise and refine personal, behavioural, social and cognitive skills.
Health and Physical Education provides students with an experiential curriculum that is contemporary, relevant, challenging and physically active.

Aims:

The Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education (F–10) aims to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to enable students to:
  • access, evaluate and synthesise information to take positive action to protect, enhance and advocate for their own and others’ health, wellbeing, safety and physical activity participation across their lifespan
  • develop and use personal, behavioural, social and cognitive skills and strategies to promote a sense of personal identity and wellbeing and to build and manage respectful relationships
  • acquire, apply and evaluate movement skills, concepts and strategies to respond confidently, competently and creatively in a variety of physical activity contexts and settings
  • engage in and enjoy regular movement-based learning experiences and understand and appreciate their significance to personal, social, cultural, environmental and health practices and outcomes
  • analyse how varied and changing personal and contextual factors shape understanding of, and opportunities for, health and physical activity locally, regionally and globally.

District Sports

The Pine Rivers District has a wide variety of team sporting events where students can apply to trial for the district teams.  Once selected these teams go on to compete at the Metropolitan level and then onto the State level.

Students can contact the PE Teacher at Strathpine State School to access application forms for these events.  Schools are given limits on how many students can trial and often school level trials are run first to select the successful students.

Pine Rivers District School Sport offers students at 29 schools in Pine Rivers District the opportunity to compete at district level for the opportunity to represent   the Pine Rivers district at Metropolitan North trials and carnivals, with the possibility of selection into Metropolitan North teams competing at state events.
Students must be nominated by their school in order to attend a district trial or carnival. they will receive all required Information and permission forms through their school.

Senior Athletics Carnival

The Strathpine State School Senior Athletics Carnival for Years 4 to 6 is usually held at the end of Term1 or beginning of Term 2 depending on when District Nominations are due. The senior carnival is a fun filled day of students striving to reach their personal best and work as a sporting team to win the Strathpine State School House Shield.

Events in our Senior Carnival include 100m, 200m, 800m, relays, long jump, high jump and shot put.

Our current sporting houses are Francis (yellow), Bennett (red) and Barbour (green).

Junior Athletics Carnival

Each year, Strathpine State School host a Junior Athletics Carnival for Prep to Year 3.  This is held on the Brisbane Show Holiday.  We do this here as it is not a public holiday for the Moreton Bay District and allows for many parents who work in the Brisbane area to use their day off to come and see their children perform.  This has been a very successful day with events such as sprints, relays, long jump, high jump, shot put, javelin and ballgames.  Students compete individually with their overall scores going to the combined  house total to reveal the winning house of the Junior Athletics Shield.

School Swimming Carnival

In Term 1 each year Strathpine State School hosts its annual Swimming Carnival.  This is hosted at the Pine Rivers State High School pool and is open to year 4 to 6 students, including any year 3 students who are eligible for District Nomination. Students pre-nominate for events ranging from Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly.  There are even noodle races for our less confident swimmers.  All participants and results, including the noodle races, are collated for each Sporting House and the winning house receives the annual Swimming Carnival Shield displayed in our office.

Gala Days & Thursday Afternoon Sports

At Strathpine State School we value physical activity and participation in sports. That’s why on a Thursday afternoon year 5 and 6 students opt to train for a sport to represent the school at the regional Gala days.
We take teams to two Gala days a year, term 2 and 3. In term 1 and 2 we offer soccer, rugby league, cricket, netball and Ultimate Frisbee. Term 3 sees us competing in cricket, basketball, T-Ball, AFL and league tag. In term 4 there is no Gala day to train for so teachers offer sports they are interested in. So far we have basketball, badminton, flag gridiron football and volleyball.
We encourage all students to take an active part in the sports afternoon as it encourages teamwork, skills and helps build resilience.

Sport is Fun Program

Each year in Term 3, Senior Year 12 Recreation students from Pine Rivers SHS get the opportunity to coach primary school students in a variety of sports over several weeks. Some of the sports taught in the Sports Fun program include:  AFL, cricket, league tag, tee ball soccer and basketball.  This is a highly valued course where not only Strathpine State School students get to be involved in an awesome active program, but the Pine Rivers SHS senior students really appreciate what is it like to be a coach and teacher.   Our students look up to the seniors who are positive and enthusiastic about sharing their sporting skills.

Bee Fit Before School Program

Bee Fit Families is one of our fantastic extra-curricular activities the school has on offer. Bianca from Bee Fit Families runs three different programs for our students all focusing on healthy habits and physical fitness, making it fun for all students to get active.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:00am-8:30am Bianca runs a morning fitness program for the Year 4-6 students encouraging them to push themselves to their limits, sportsmanship, how to do correct warm up and cool down exercises and so much more. This class is a great way for the students to get rid of some of their never-ending energy supply and also helps concentration levels throughout the day.

Prep Motor Skills Program

Twice a week the prep students partake in a gross motor and co-ordination class to help develop all their skills needed in everyday activities such as falling over in the playground, climbing, holding stationary in the classroom and so much more. This class has already seen some incredible improvements with all the prep students.

Swimming Lessons

Each year Strathpine State School provides learn to swim and water safety lessons for students.  Our lessons are held in the Pine Rivers SHS pool.  In 2023 all students in years Prep to Year 6 were involved in the program. Year 4, 5 and 6 swim in Term 1 whilst Prep, Year 1, 2 and 3 swim in term 4.  We implement the Royal Lifesaving Swim and Survive program for schools.  Swim and Survive is a comprehensive swimming and water safety initiative of Royal Life Saving that seeks to increase the swimming and water safety skills of all Australian children in order to prevent drowning and increase participation in safe aquatic activity.  Skills and knowledge learnt in the Swim and Survive program provides a level of protection and aims to provide children with solid foundation skills in swimming, survival and basic rescue skills.
